A family funeral brings Henry Bodine and his wife to rural England. Her uncle, Eddie Nancarrow, has been brutally murdered in his cottage. The police treat it as a burglary that went wrong, but Henry isn’t so sure.
He discovers secrets that have been hidden for years, secrets that slowly lead him closer to the real reason for Eddie’s murder. As a schoolboy in 1941, Eddie Nancarrow lied about his age in order to join the RAF and fight against the Luftwaffe. Almost straight away Eddie came up against a personal vendetta responsible for more than one untimely death.
While Henry delves deeper into the past, he also struggles to cope with a personal problem closer to him: his wife’s distress over her inability to conceive.
