The year is 1940. Much of England is now German occupied territory. The RAF has lost half of its airfields, half of its aircraft and too many aircrew. The only way to keep fighting is to allow women to fly.
Eddie Pascoe is the navigator aboard a Wellington bomber. As his fellow crewmates are killed they are replaced by women. His new pilot is Annabel Riley, a young American woman, the daughter of a wealthy newspaper publisher. Annabel quickly earns the nickname ‘Smiley Riley’. If she smiles at you, you are in serious trouble!
Annabel and her crew face fierce attacks from the Luftwaffe, but that is not the only problem. The pilot also finds herself under attack from men people who object to women flying operational missions.
Eddie puts his trust in Annabel, but he is less than happy when his girlfriend joins the crew. Can he help to keep her out of danger?
